Computer Annoyances and How to Fix Them

August 2008

Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, but a lot of the time they can be frustrating, time-wasting machines. Since computers are machines, they can't be fully trusted to do everything perfectly every time but when computers work, they work very well. Let's take a look at some of the more common gripes amongst computer users and our suggestions for fixing them.

RE: Fwd: Fwd: Email (and time-wasting email in general). There are tons of tools to improve your own productivity and stop wasting time on useless stuff such as forwarding mail, but not everybody got the memo as you might notice from your inbox. Your best options for dealing with chain forwards, repetitive conversations, and other e-mail gaffes are smart filters, including a fwd filter for those "Did you know" e-mails from Aunt Margie and Uncle Bif. Correspondents just not getting the message? Take the next step with an e-mail to the offender.

GIANT email attachments. It’s hard to prevent your relatives, co-workers and goofy-humored friends from sending that "hilarious" 10 MB PowerPoint "joke." If you use web based e-mail such as Hotmail, Yahoo or G-mail, large e-mail attachments will be rejected.  If you use Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express, your dedicated mail client is frozen trying to grab that huge file from your Internet Service Provider’s mail server.  Our solution, find out if your ISP offers a web based interface to check your e-mail. That way, you can jump in and check your messages and clear space-hogging attachments from your email.

Computer slows down. Your computer used to be fast but now the start time is slower than before...what happened? You’ve scanned viruses and spyware found nothing. It possible your Windows Registry is overloaded. Windows Registry is a record sheet of your software, hardware, users and preferences. When you install and uninstall software, it will records changes made to your computer. Sometimes it keeps it keeps old information which can cause your registry to be corrupted and can cause your computer to run slower. The easiest way to fix Registry errors is to use a registry cleaner. Registry Mechanic is an advanced registry cleaner for Windows that allows you to safely scan, clean, and repair registry problems with a few simple mouse clicks. You can get this program from www.download.com

No Content Filter for Children. There are an increasing number of children using the Internet. The advantage is that children have access to a world of knowledge.  The disadvantage is large amount of adult content that is on the web. If you have Windows Vista, the parental controls help parents manage what their children can do on the computer. These controls help parents determine which games their children can play, which programs they can use, and which websites they can visit—and when. Parents can restrict computer use to specific times and trust that Windows Vista will enforce those restrictions, even when they're away from home. Windows XP and earlier versions of Windows do not have parental controls. Programs like Net Nanny and Cyber Patrol do a good job blocking questionable websites and monitoring kids' time online.

Infected by Spyware. Getting spyware on your PC is the most annoying thing that can happen to you. Not only is it inconvenient, but it can tie up your computer's resources, and cause all kinds of havoc. If you have spyware on your PC, one way to get rid of it is to download and install an anti-spyware program.  Free programs such as, Ad-Aware 2008 , Spybot Search and Destroy and Windows Defender are the best tools you can use to remove spyware. The only drawback to these free programs is you will have to remember to run them and make sure they are updated.

Incompatible issues - Especially in Windows Vista. We don't mean to criticize the works (Vista OS) of Microsoft, on the contrary, we appreciate the Aero effect of Vista. While this eye candy effect causes software incompatible, which brings many inconvenience to Vista users: there are many programs cannot work! So Vista users have to keep an eye to the sign "Compatible with Vista":

Lack of Memory. This problem is very common and may not cause your attention. While we should watch out how many applications running at the same time, which could help us reduce the crash times of PC and keep our PC performs better. In order to see how many programs are running meanwhile, press "Ctrl+Alt+DEl" to see how much the usage of CPU is and you can also know the amount and state of running programs.

We should pay attention to this problem, though it seems easy to solve and nothing destroyed, however, this is a reason that would cause PC's unease.

Computer Crashes. It's annoying thing when we are informed by Windows "this application has unexpected quit...." Ouch! My file! Haven't saved! Oh no!!!! See? Crashes may happen every single second, and there is no obvious sign to inform you. The most frustrated thing is forget to save our works. Then, the solution to crashes, not complex, just save your every single works minute by minute; or download the latest patch for our operating systems from the official websites.
